Frequently asked questions

Questions before you join?

Everything you may want to know about The Ensemble before deciding whether it feels right for you.

The basics
What exactly is The Ensemble?

The Ensemble is a relaxed weekly musical-theatre experience for adults — part singing group, part musical-theatre fan club. Think of it as the fan club that sings. There are no auditions, no need to read music, no harmony drills and no pressure to perform.

Do I need to audition?

No. There are no auditions.

Do I need to be able to read music?

No. You do not need to be able to read music to take part.

Will we learn harmonies like a choir?

No. The Ensemble is about singing the songs together, not spending sessions learning separate harmony parts. We’ll focus on the melody, the music and enjoying the show.

Will I have to perform in public?

No. There are no compulsory public performances and no months-long rehearsal schedule leading up to a show. There may occasionally be opportunities to sing a solo or duet, but they are always optional. The weekly sessions are the main event.

Will I have to sing on my own?

No. The focus is singing together. Any opportunities to sing a solo or duet are optional; you can take part in The Ensemble without doing either.

Who is it for?
I haven’t sung since school. Is that okay?

Absolutely. The Ensemble is for adults of all levels of experience, including people who haven’t sung since school or who mostly sing at home or in the car.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. You don’t need to bring a friend or know anyone already. The Ensemble is for adults who want to enjoy musical theatre together, and you’re welcome to arrive on your own.

I’m not sure I’m a good enough singer. Should I still join?

Yes. You do not need to arrive feeling confident or “good enough”. The Ensemble is designed to be welcoming, low-pressure and enjoyable, with no auditions and no judgement.

I have lots of experience with musical theatre. Will I find it too basic?

Experienced singers are very welcome too. The Ensemble is not intended as formal vocal training; it is about enjoying musical theatre together — singing favourites, discovering new songs and exploring the stories, characters and emotion behind different shows.

Is there an age limit?

The Ensemble is for adults. There is no upper age limit.

How sessions work
What happens during a typical session?

Each week will include a warm-up, singing favourites from well-known musicals, discovering songs you may not have encountered before, and exploring some of the stories, characters and details behind the shows. Most importantly, it is time to sing and enjoy musical theatre with other people who love it too.

How long is each session?

Each session will last 90 minutes.

Where will sessions take place?

The first Ensemble is taking shape in the Vale of Glamorgan. The confirmed venue, day and time will be shared when they are finalised.

How much will it cost?

Membership is £120 for the full 12-session term when paid in full, or £128 when the cost is spread.

  • Two payments of £64.
  • Four payments of £32.

Every payment option gives you the same Ensemble experience.
